What is MCA ?

Master of Computer Applications (MCA) is a two-year (four semesters) professional Master’s Degree in computer science awarded in India. In some NITs, MCA is a three – year (six semesters) course.  The course was designed to meet the growing demand for qualified professionals in the field of Information Technology. It is a postgraduate course that can be taken up after obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree. The MCA programme is inclined more toward Application Development and thus has more emphasis on latest programming language and tools to develop better and faster applications.
The MCA program focuses on providing a sound theoretical background as well as good practical exposure to students in the relevant areas. It is intended to provide a modern, industry-oriented education in applied computer science. It aims at producing trained professionals who can successfully meet the demands of the information technology industry.

Objectives of the MCA course :

The MCA program prepares students to take up positions as system analysts, systems designers, Programmers and managers in any field related to information technology. The program, therefore, aims at imparting comprehensive knowledge with equal emphasis on theory and practice. The MCA students are encouraged to spend a full semester working in the industry in the institute giving them insight into the workings of the IT world. However, the course curriculum will have enough flexibility to enable a student to undertake advance studies in computer science later on.

Duration :

The duration of MCA course is total two academic years. In some NITs, MCA is a three – year course. It is a full-time postgraduate course offered by many colleges/Universities situated in India. This course has been divided into four semesters (or six semesters) with the duration of six months each.

Eligibility :

  • Students who have done their graduation in any discipline like Science, Commerce, Arts, Engineering, BCAfrom any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.

  • Aspirants should have studied Mathematics subject in the 10+2 standard or graduation level.

  • The qualifying examination must be passed with 50% marks (45% for SC/ST category candidates).

Admission :

Admissions in MCA course is given on the basis of entrance examinations. Many top colleges and universities in India offer admission on the basis of merit list prepared as per the marks scored in the entrance test. Generally, the entrance examinations are based on Mathematics, Reasoning and Computer. There is a different exam pattern of each entrance test.
